‘My mother and I have always had wonderful, open and honest conversations. She has always been very open about the cervical cancer population screening programme. That gave me peace of mind because I knew what to expect. So when I received my first invitation to take part, it came as no surprise. I made an appointment with my GP right away. The female doctor’s assistant put me at ease and explained exactly what she was going to do. It was really done in no time and wasn’t too bad. I subconsciously found the wait for the results a tense experience, but fortunately everything was fine. With a simple and quick test, you can reduce your risk of cervical cancer. I personally know a number of women where abnormal cells have been found. That knowledge, combined with my mother’s openness, makes taking part important and the obvious thing for me to do.
